In one classroom at Covington’s Ninth District Elementary School, students pored over reading lessons. In another, they worked on projects. They’ll eat dinner here tonight, get help with homework and maybe even take some art classes.
This is what Covington Independent Schools calls a Community Learning Center, a place where students can get the out-of-school help they need to succeed when they’re in school.
District officials hope – and data show they’ll likely be right – that these hours after school will help these kids, many of whom are low-income or struggling academically, be more successful in class.
