In America today, 7.6 million children are alone and unsupervised after school. In Covington, we are working to decrease this number by keeping kids safe, helping working families, and inspiring learning through our seven Community Learning Centers.
With a Community Learning Center in each elementary school, middle school, and high school in Covington, students are able to participate in academic and enrichment activities before and after school, as well as during the summer months, in a safe and welcoming environment throughout the year.
The lights are kept on beyond the bell each day, allowing for hundreds of students across Covington to share in the Community Learning Center experience. This is celebrated annually with Lights On Afterschool.
Lights On Afterschool is a project of the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that all children have access to quality, affordable afterschool programs. Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and has become a hallmark of the afterschool movement. Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has served as National Chair of Lights On Afterschool since 2001.
This year, Covington Community Learning Centers celebrated in several ways: lightbulb coloring contests, lightbulb challenge (pose as a lightbulb), community resource fair, Trunk or Treat, adult education workshop, pumpkin carving, character strength-building workshop, and so much more.
Covington Partners is proud to be a Lights On Afterschool partner.
