This fall, Glenn O. Swing Elementary School’s Wildcat Club CLC welcomed Coach Barbara Bobbitt for her final year as leader of the robotics team. Along with co-lead Emily Dill, Bobbitt and the team of fourth and fifth grade students participated in the FIRST LEGO League regional competition on Saturday, December 10.
As participants of the competition and the program overall, students apply their STEM skills combined with critical thinking to work as a team, design and build a robot, present to a panel of judges, and compete in a mission-based robotics game. At the competition, students had three attempts at the missions table with their robot. The first round, scoring 190 points, proved to be the highest for Team GOS, also ranking the team fourth place in the missions field.
It was their presentation that brought it home, though. Worth the majority of points (75%), the GOS students soared to second place overall after presenting their solar-themed idea to a panel of judges.
Now, the team will move on to the state tournament at Northern Kentucky University in February.
Congratulations to Glenn O. Swing and all Community Learning Centers in Covington that participated in the tournament.
