Art is the expression or application of human creativity and imagination. It captures ideas, conveys emotion, unpacks experiences, and reveals perspectives reflective of individual and collective circumstances. Art and creativity can provide a powerful outlet that helps individuals feel connected to one another and the world.
Caregivers of the Cub Zone Community Learning Center students at John G. Carlisle Elementary School discovered this during a recent adult skill-building event in partnership with Art Equals.
Charlotte Reed, art therapist and executive director of Art Equals, introduced the group to the small but mighty zine. A zine (short for magazine) is a self-published booklet or pamphlet that can be handwritten and illustrated to reflect the passions and interests of the creator. Reed taught the group how to create an original “8 page wonder”—a type of zine that is constructed from a single sheet of ordinary copy paper. The finished zine can be opened flat and placed on a copier to create duplicates to give to family, friends, colleagues, or community members.
“Everyone’s voice matters,” says Reed, "and being able to express what’s important to you is a way to connect with others.” Connecting through creativity is a central mission at Art Equals, a local non-profit that provides inclusive and accessible opportunities to create. Reed emphasized the importance of connecting with others as a way to help us mitigate the effects of loneliness, which has become a major health concern in our country.
In addition to a presentation from Reed, caregivers were able to create their own zines on any topic they desired. Participants also shared their creations with the group and discussed the topic behind their zine.
