From Newport Roots to Covington: CLC Coordinator's Vision for Connecting Students and Community

Mike Lewis sees the opportunity to work with students as the new Community Learning Center coordinator at Holmes Middle School as a dream job.

“My professional dream for my entire life was always to work with adolescent students/youth and find a way to bridge the gap between community and education,” he said.

Now that he has the opportunity, he looks forward to using what he’s learned in previous jobs to serve the Bulldog family, he said.

A native of Newport, Lewis has worked in higher education and most recently at the Sun Behavioral Health facility.

At HMS, Lewis said he wants to be active in the community, think outside of the box when addressing unmet needs, find new ways to grow professionally as well as stay connected with students, families, teachers, and the community.

Lewis comes from a family with deep educational roots. His mom works as an instructional assistant in the Newport school system and helps with afterschool programming. His dad, a former coach, works in maintenance in Newport schools and sometimes drives a school bus.

Lewis played football at the University of Pikeville, where he received his undergraduate degree in social work. He studied higher education management at the University of Pittsburgh. He and his wife, Anna, worked at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh, before returning to Kentucky.

His wife recently has worked several jobs at Thomas More University, where she now serves as assistant dean of students.

Lewis loves sports and coaching and being outdoors, especially with his wife and pet Husky. He’s also always on the lookout for a new coffee shop.
